The Black Marble
NASA has released a jaw-dropping new image collection of the Earth at night, illuminated by constellations of electric humans. These images were collected in 22 days and 312 orbits by the Suomi NPP Earth observing satellite, then stitched together into a continuous, high-resolution image of the planet at night.
Take a look at the high-res zoom of the continental U.S. I’m sort of stunned at how orderly the pattern of dots becomes in the Midwest, a tiny town at the crossroads of every county highway from Chicago to Cheyenne.
NASA has the full details and some wonderful videos on their site. Download your next desktop wallpaper and check out the rest of the world here.
I can’t stop staring!!!

Weaving Neuroscience and Art Together
What’s that? Wooden brains aren’t enough for you? Ok, since you can’t get enough, here’s some amazing knitted brain art. These are real fMRI scans and anatomical studies translated into yarn and woven into rugs!
There’s actually a whole mini-museum for this stuff, appropriately titled “The Museum of Scientifically Accurate Brain Art”. Best “weaving” of science and art since these math-inspired creations of New Mexico artist Donna Loraine Contractor.
Even more: Here’s some yarn playing tricks on your brain, via “Illusion Knitting”.
The fifth planet, Jupiter
If I didn’t know Jupiter was real, I’m not sure I’d believe Jupiter was real.

Science-ify your breakfast with a Möbius bagel
You’ve probably heard of a Möbius strip before - it’s a continuous shape that only has one side and one edge. You can make one pretty easily by cutting a strip of paper, giving it a half twist, and taping the ends together to form a loop. However, if you want to really impress, make a Möbius bagel. By following the instructions, you can cut your bagel (or your donut!) into two interlocking bagel halves. From now on, eat your breakfast like a Scientist!
Math up your breakfast, and increase shmear surface area at the same time!! Win-win.

KIDS, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. ONLY ATTEMPT WITH A TRAINED CHEMIST OR A SCIENTIFIC PROFESSIONAL AND PLENTY OF BALLS.
At Chemistry Club of Phillps Exeter Academy, we fire bend. No big deal.
Here are the procedures:
- Mix an ample amount of soap and water.
- Make methane bubbles with this mixture.
- Take off anything on your arms (including watches, bracelets, long sleeves, etc.)
- Soak your hands completely
- Scoop up bubbles.
- place hand vertically over but slightly to the side of a lighted candle, so the bubble overhanging from your palm is directly over the candle.
- Do not panic.
- The fire will form upwards so do not face your palm downwards. Always face it upwards.
- WATCH IT BURN
raaaaaaaaaaaaad
I’ve done this! It’s really cool to see up close :D

Seth Meyers on the Steroid Era of storms.
From last night’s Late Night filmed during Sandy, with no audience members.
At least someone in New York is hitting home runs in October. Bravo, Seth Meyers!

BILL NYE-SCIENCE STYLE
AHAHAHAHAHA … I can’t even … Oh man, just when I thought I was done with Gangnam Style, you pull me back in!
(video by AlexRMSTITANIC)
Another shot of Endeavour flying over Austin today. I didn’t see it with my own eyes, but I sensed its spacey presence, like a disturbance in the Force.
It was as if somewhere, suddenly a great explorer had been grounded.
Hope you didn’t miss this epic shot from this morning.

Reddit’s mind-blowing sentences
So, a while back I saw a Reddit thread about mind-blowing sentences and what struck me was how many of the best had foundations in scientific disciplines, from human conciousness to genetics. Seeing these sentences, I couldn’t help but put together a nice album that I knew us Tumblrs would love.
In case the hydrogen one has you stumped, as reddit user ‘Propionate’ put it:
“Really hot plasma, Hydrogen, Big clouds of hydrogen, Big balls of hydrogen, stars, supernova, heavier elements like carbon, clouds of heavier elements, big balls of heavier elements, planets, life, humans”
Everyone should make it a point to think about something like this at least once a day.
